So work this week is going to be devastating.
Whoever thinks working with animals is easy or all fun and games, could not be more wrong. Especially when the animals you work with have all been abused in some way, shape or form. Watching different breeds and different ages come in, all with something to show for the abuse they have received.
I have seen dogs so famished that you can see every detail of every bone in their body, dogs that were beaten so badly by a so called human being that they are literally black and blue under their fur. Dogs that have been so uncared for, that their fur is so matted the only way to deal with it is to shave it all off and start new.
It is a job where you have to work incredibly hard to get any result out of the animals, to make them realise they are in a safe place, that they will get food, shelter, love and all the things they have never had.
After working non stop with some of the same dogs for nearly a year, you bond with them more than some of your own animals, you spend at least 8 hours a day feeding, cleaning and caring for these animals, that you can’t help but fall in love with them, quirks and all.
So to hear today that a case of nearly 10 dogs from one house, will be sent back because the judge in court clearly didn’t think the case was bad enough, is utterly heartbreaking.
We spent a year, making such progress with every single one of those dogs, that the thought of them going back is actually unfathomable. We watched half of them grow up, they were puppies when they first came in, they will go back as fully rounded adults. Half of them will more than likely attack the others again when back in that situation and those conditions, and there’s nothing we can do about it apart from watch them go and feel completely gutted, then pick ourselves up and carry on looking after all the other dogs we have with as much enthusaism we can muster so that hopefully the same thing doesn’t happen again.

he looked at me and he had tears in his eyes and he said in the most horrified voice

then he started to cry and ran off and yelled
